Chapter Eighteen

Feeling better after eating his burger, Daniels finished his beer. Sitting at the table, he watched the group in front of him, glad they were all together for Erin’s revelation. Even though the news had slowly sunk in, he still had his questions and while they ate, he’d asked Erin about her upbringing and her mother, and she’d asked about his childhood, his mother and Raymond.

Despite their differences, they found they had several similarities. Neither one of them enjoyed a great relationship with Raymond, although Daniels believed he and his father had grown closer after their trip through Elmwood. Daniels suspected, though, after he confronted Dad about Erin, that their truce might be short-lived.

Realizing he and Erin had dominated the conversation, Daniels spoke to Mikey. “Any news with you? How’re Mason and Trick?”

“They’re fine,” said Mikey. She told them about Mason’s latest case and explained Mason’s work as a paranormal medium and PI to Erin.

“I’ve heard of that stuff, but never really believed in it,” said Erin.

“Hang around us long enough,” said Rem, “and you soon will.”

“We’ve got some stories,” added Daniels.

“We’ll save those for later. We don’t want to scare Erin away.” Marjorie munched on a chip and spoke to Mikey. “How’s it going with the upstairs closet? Have you two gone through it?”

Rem eyed Mikey, and she nodded. “We’re getting there.”

Marjorie widened her eyes. “Oh, dear. Should I not have asked? I’m sorry.”

Rem shook his head. “It’s fine, Marj. Nothing you can’t bring up. It’s slow going, and it brings up a lot of crap, but we’re getting through it.”

Daniels saw Erin’s look of confusion. “You mind if I tell Erin?” asked Daniels.

Rem shrugged. “Sure. She’s family now.”

Daniels told Erin about Jennie.

“I’m surprised Cain didn’t mention her,” said Erin.

“Cain never met her,” said Rem. “My relationship with him has been frosty for a while.”

“I’m sorry you lost her,” Erin said softly to Rem. “Losing my mom has been the hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with. I don’t think I’ll ever adjust to life without her.”

Daniels thought of his sister, Melinda, and how he still missed her. “It’s never easy. But time helps.”

“So does dealing with stuff you’d rather avoid,” added Rem. “I found some items, though, that I didn’t expect.” He wiped his fingers on his napkin. “I found a box with my dad’s gun. A 38 Special. Mom gave it to me after he died. I forgot I even had it.”

“Did he ever use it?” asked Daniels.

“He did. He’d take it to the shooting range and even took me a few times.”

“You going to keep it?” asked Marjorie.

“He wants me to have it,” said Mikey. She made a face. “But I’m not so sure I want it. I’ve never been a fan of guns.”

“Honey,” said Rem. “It wouldn’t hurt for you to practice. You don’t have to travel with it, but at least it will be in the house should you need it. With everything going on right now, it would make me feel better.”

“It’s not a bad idea,” said Daniels.
